The treadmill has been used for over a century to exercise dogs particularly in conditioning your dog for shows or just for general use to keep your dog fit and healthy. It is used in the same way as a person conditions his body at a gym. It is misunderstood by the public as they think it is cruel. But if the dog doesn't want to run the mill he WON'T!

You can introduce the treadmill at any age, as it will take a while for the dog to get used to it.  Some owners get frustrated with the dog when they've just spent a lot of money on the mill and often give up too early.  First they have to get used to it being in their home. Then they can sit or stand on the mill for a while everyday.  Never move the belt yourself as it might frighten the dog and it will take even longer to get the dog to use the mill.  They then have to get used to the noise it makes when the belt goes round. It sometimes helps if he watches another dog on the mill, but keep your dog on the lead so he doesn't interfere and distract the other dog. Most importantly allow them to go at their own pace and give them lots of encouragement.

This all takes time so don't just give up. Remember your dog will only be as good as the work you put into training him.

HANDY TIPS

1- Walk the dog to warm up first

2- Make sure he empties out before going on the mill so he doesn't feel uncomfortable

3- Give him lots of praise and encouragement

4- Let him work at his own pace

5- Lift your dog on & off the mill to prevent injuries

6- Do not allow him to drink straight after the workout as he might vomit. Let him cool down and slow his heart rate down first

7- Ensure they enjoy the experience otherwise they won't want to go on the mill again

8- Try to use other methods in conjunction with the mill to give your dog a variety and sense of fun

9- If using a slat mill make sure it is free turning and not stiff

Using the treadmill everyday or every other day will help keep your dog fit, healthy and in great shape for many years to come. These are only basic guidelines if you have any questions please e-mail here.
