The A-frame is as it suggests a  piece of wood made into the shape of a letter A. We recommend fastening a piece of carpet over the frame to prevent injury to the dog if he slips off the frame. This is good for increasing stamina and for developing the muscles in their shoulders, back and legs.

We suggest you get your dog used to the flirt pole first before trying to get your dog to jump over the A-frame.  The dog will then be encouraged to chase the flirt pole over the A-frame. If this doesn't work you might need to help your dog over the frame, first by lifting him on top of the frame and then letting him jump off.  Get him to run towards the frame and assist him over giving him lots of encouragement.  You could use treats, a raggy or another favourite toy to lure him over.  If this all fails get another dog to demonstrate while your dog watches, hopefully he'll get all excited and want to do the same. Again keep your dog on the lead while the other dog is demonstrating to prevent an accident.

Remember your dog will only be as good as the effort you put into your dog.

ENDURANCE

You can use the frame as part of your training programme in many ways. One is to build up how many times your dog can go over the frame in a short amount of time.  This is all about speed and making sure your dog doesn't waste time by jumping too far away from the A-frame.  You have to set a time limit and  count how many times he goes over both ways in that time. This way you can work him regularly and see an improvement by recording all his achievements down on paper  Try to improve his record but be mindful of his general health and keep it fun.

HIGH-FLYING

This is to see how high your dog can jump from the top of the A-frame. We recommend using a flirt pole with this, as the dog will jump to try and get the lure.  Only allow your dog to jump off the A-frame onto gym mats or some kind of padding, as it can be very easy for your dog to injure himself. He needs to be profficient at the A-frame before attempting this as it would take a long time to regain his confidence after an unfortunate injury.

Remember do not allow them to drink during or straight after exercise as it may make them vomit.  Let them cool down first to slow their heart rate down and then allow them to drink. These are only basic guidelines if you have any questions please e-mail here.
